ELT Gaming Glossary

Games have a language all of their own with a number of terms either specific to gaming or with a special meaning in a gaming context. This page (regularly updated) aims to briefly explain some of those terms - click on the links to do into more depth.

I hope you find it useful!

Avatar - an in-game image or character which represents the player
Game-based learning - promoting learning through the use of games. Also known as GBL

Gamification
- the application of game mechanics to a non-gaming context.
Sandbox - a type of game (or a mode within a game) that allows the player to experiment with the game environment while offering a large degree of freedom and customisation
